HEX vs RGB vs HSL: picking the right color format for the job
Same color, three different ways to write it. Here's what each format is actually good for.
HEX, RGB, and HSL all describe exactly the same set of colors — they're just different coordinate systems for the same underlying color space. Which one is easiest to work with depends entirely on what you're trying to do with it.
HEX
A six-digit code like #2ec4d6, where each pair of digits is the red, green, and blue channel in hexadecimal. HEX is compact and universally supported, which makes it the default for design tools, CSS, and anywhere you're just copying a color value around. It's not intuitive to read or adjust by hand — there's no obvious way to look at #2ec4d6 and know it needs to be "a bit darker."
RGB
The same red/green/blue channels as HEX, but written as three numbers from 0–255 (or as percentages). RGB is a direct match for how displays actually render color — each channel maps to how much of that color a pixel emits — which makes it the natural format for anything doing pixel-level image work. Like HEX, it's not intuitive for manual adjustment: increasing "brightness" isn't a single obvious change across all three numbers.
HSL
Hue, saturation, lightness — a format designed specifically to be intuitive for humans adjusting color. Hue is the base color (as a position on a color wheel, 0–360°), saturation is how vivid or muted it is, and lightness is how close to black or white it is. This is why HSL is the easiest format to hand-tune: "make it a bit more muted" is just lowering saturation, and "make it a bit darker" is just lowering lightness, without touching the base hue at all.
A quick way to decide
- Copying a design token or CSS value someone gave you → HEX
- Doing pixel-level image or canvas work → RGB
- Building a color picker or programmatically generating a palette → HSL
